Backpack just sounds like a good way to get sweat all over everything while running, and most photography backpacks are great for hauling photogear, less successful as backpacks.
I'd say either look for a better point and shoot camera , or find some kind of harness maybe? than can keep the camera from jouncing about while you're running and not shooting. Personally, I don't think I could shoot and run simultaneously.

If it is at all possible, I don't think it's good idea! Casual jogging/walking in the park....maybe. But running?!
If you must, a P&S would probably be your best bet. It's small, light, can fit in a fannypack/whatever. A DSLR is awful heavy and not ergonomically conducive to running. My biggest concern would be falling....

Canon S90 or G11 and belt pouch... If it needs better than that to get the picture, go back later with a DSLR.

If you're going to chuck it in a bag, I would think that camera armour might be an option if you want to be ultra-safe against it banging against your body/the groud if you fall!

I've got a Lowepro Slingshot 200, and I think this bag would be ideal for when you go out running. The camera is kept safe and secure, and the design of the bag means you can get the camera out in a couple of seconds without having to take the bag off your shoulder. I don't run, but I've used this bag when out walking, and motorcycling with my camera.

Get one of those baby strollers I see parents using while jogging. Strap in your camera.
