Default Photo editing software replace filters

Newbie here...be forgiving. I've purchased my first digital SLR camera and would like to buy some filters, specifically a polarizer, light diffuser and possibly a warming-type filter. I've used these type filters years ago with my father's camera. I'm wondering now though if current day photo editing software makes any of these filters obsolete. I suppose photos always turn out best if set up properly to begin with rather than manipulating the image through software. Your input is most appreciated!!

I am a novice with post corrections so will not comment on techniques but most filter effects can be done with software. The big exception to that is the glare cutting effects of a polarizing filter.

Sure, but it depends on your personal philosophy and what you're trying to achieve.

I like to do as much work before I press the button as possible, so I have to do less work after. This is for a few reasons, a big one is I hate spending so much time sitting in front of the computer instead of shooting. But also, you can never get more out of a photo than what the camera captures, so might as well start with an image that's as close to what you want.

I think if you're trying to decide what types of filters you need, then playing with software is a good diea, so you don't waste your money.

Neutral density filters are another example that you can't really process for.

Thank you for your responses. I will start with a polarizer and a neutral density filter. I'm so new at this, it's scary! Thanks again!

In some cases, postwork can replace filters. It's fairly easy to darken a sky like a circular polarizer would, for instance. On the other hand: getting rid of glare (like a circ pol) or extreme-length exposures (with ND filters) are impossible in post.
