Default Photojournalism section?

Not to beat a dead horse here (and I'm not trying to rehash it, just simply offering a suggestion) but the discussion yesterday about the dog photo had me thinking. Maybe DPS could create a "photojournalism section" for those of us in the business or those that like to take photojournalism type photos. I mean this site provides for portraits, landscape, animal photography, sports and so on. Why not photojournalism.

Most of the photos on this site are happy, or pretty, or cool or whatever. And I enjoy looking at them. But as most have said, not all photography is pretty and easy to swallow. On the flip side not all photojournalism is horrible either. Photojournalist tend to look at a subject differently since we are charged with trying to tell a whole story in one (or if we are lucky a series) photo or trying to reflect what the reporter has written in a photo. I would love to have a place to see that type of photography here and connect with other photojournalist around the world and admire their work.

If DPS has such a section I think is should be made clear the rules to ensure that no one post deliberately disturbing photos. The dog photo and the photo of the person in the car accident are real and are no less "photography" than the cute baby photos on DPS.

At least with its own section, people would have the option to look or not.

Just a thought.....what do you guys think?

I could be wrong but I think a lot of images that are used for photojournalism become the property of the newspaper so it would go against laws/copyrights to post them on the internet if their property of a newspaper? I could be wrong.
Unless you just mean photos of this and that event/dead dog that you aren't selling to the newspaper for their use.

Not to take away from your suggestion, but that option already exists.

I understand it exists but if it was its own section people would not have to worry, especially if someone didn't put a warning on their photo.

I"m not specifically talking about posting photos that have run in a paper or magazine, but photos that fall under what is considered "photojournalism" - ie the dog photo. Not all photojournalist work full time for a publication so their images are theirs. The only one that is property of the publication would be the one that is printed by that publication. The photography retains the rest of the prints.

It really depends on the individual circumstance. Freelancers retain copyright, some staffers negotiate copyright. I really don't think there are enough PJs on here to warrant our own section.

It may not get much attention, but it would certainly be nice.

I really do not get all the controversy about the dog. Sh** happens, life happens, it gets documented, we all move on. There is no sense in lingering on the subject of a dead dog. Unfortunately many people tend to ignore the sad reality that things like the dog photo DO happen. Is there really a need for another section? Maybe, maybe not. Possibly a rule about tagging photos in the title for discretion might me more worth while than a new section...

I'm a freelancer and when I work for newspapers, magazines and wire services I retain my rights through a contract I sign. Most of the stuff I posts on DPS is mainly either photojournalism or sports. So, I put it in SYS, or what ever category that fancies me

Just to clarify....the dog photo was an example of why a photojournalism section might be a cool thing. This post was just my thought on a section to allow for photojournalist photos, not the dead dog.
