Default I think it's wrong...

...and completely disagree with the closing of this thread:

Can the moderators please delete the dead dog post? - it is really getting to me!

Valid opinions, discussions, and disagreements were taking place, not only of a particular post in SYS, but of a photography subject in general. Let it happen.

Can someone describe the photo, please? I didn't have a chance to see it, or maybe I wouldn't like to look at it now... Thanks.

And I disagree with publicly objecting to moderator decisions. Their job is difficult enough without the membership trying to micro-manage them and criticising their every move.

It showed a dog lying in the road, a few people looking at it. The dog looked pretty much like it was asleep, and the photo was taken from the other side of the road. It was a sad photo, but not gory or gruesome.

Edit: Unless I'm thinking of a different dead dog pic I saw online recently...

Thanks, Danny
Based on your description, I imagine it not to be shocking as I expected, if this was the image in question.

I saw the photo in question, while I would probably not post anything like that in here, I didn't think it was that bad. It did, however get me to think about humanity in general, and the interactions we have with nature, being it good or bad, I then somehow got off a rabbit trail of thinking about my own mortality. I am going to have to say whether or not anyone thought it was in bad taste, it still made you think, and to me that is what it is all about.

The original thread wasn't closed. It's still up here: http://digital-photography-school.co...-s-images.html

The thread that was closed was the one objecting to the first, and I completely agree with the moderators closing it. The SYS section is supposed to be a place for people to post without expecting harsh criticism or critique, but the tone of the comments in the original thread and in the objection thread violated the spirit of that.

I completely agree with the mods editing the title to warn those who might not wish to see it, but I see no reason to remove it or to allow critical discussion of a SYS post.

Also, I have to say, I find it a fascinating that practically nobody cared about the photos from the fatal car wreck last month, (http://digital-photography-school.co...ing-blood.html) but show a photo of a dead dog and that's over the line.

It wasn't my intention to personally attack a particular moderator or moderators in general. If my statement came across this way, then I didn't present my view properly and I apologize. I stand right along with you in saying that their job is difficult and that they all do a great job. The moderators are a major part of why this site is succesful. To suggest that I was trying to micro-manage them or that I criticise their every move, however, is wrong.

As part of the membership, I believe I have a voice and the right to an opinion, no more or no less than any other member. My objection to the closing of the thread wasn't about me, but about the opportunity for others to express their opinions and have a discussion about a serious subject.

As for the original post that sparked the discussion, I'm probably in the majority of opinion that it wasn't the right place for it. But, I think the discussion thread was moving fluidly towards a debate about certain types of images in general. About whether certain images should be even taken at all. A valid discussion, in my opinion, and as old as photography itself. A discussion not about the specific thread, and not really about 'death' particularly, but about there being a 'line' not to cross, who decides what that 'line' is, or should there even be a 'line' in photography in general? That's where I thought the discussion might be headed. That's why I objected to the closing of the thread.

I was going to say that. I didn't ask for that one to be closed, but I did question the ethics of taking that photograph, and generally people thought it was fine. A dead dog in the road with a tiny bit of blood though...

I was going to bring this up as well. There was hardly any hoopla about that thread at all.
