Default ebook reader info needed

I'm thinking of getting an ebook reader for my wife and figured there must be a bunch of camera people that are into these too. What is good? I was looking at either the Sony or the Ectaco Jetbook Lite.

I don't have one, but I've been researching them.

The biggest limitation is that, at the moment, each reader locks you in to one specific vendor for buying books. Kindle=>Amazon, nook=>Barnes&Noble, Sony=>Sony Connect, Ectaco=>???.

One of the things that's going to have to happen before eReaders really take off is the ability to shop around for your e-books. That, and lowering the price.

My wife has the Sony and loves it. We do however fly quite a bit and it is an electronic device so you have to turn it off on take off. I just read magazines and stuff on my laptop so no need for one for me.

I've been looking into these too.
I'm actually thinking the Sony eReader and the Barnes&Noble Nook are probably two of the best (I'm sure the kindle is good, the kindles buttons just look strange).

I looked at the Nook and really did not like it at all - found it very awkward to use. The new Sony is nice but it has a huge price tag. We decided to get the Jetbook Lite as Newegg was selling them for only $119. People either love or hate the unit, but to us it seemed like a good place to start as it has a lot of compatibility and does not cost a lot. Figure if she likes it then in a year we can buy a much better one for not much more.

Found this great forum MobileRead Forums that really is a killer source for info.

cough torrents cough....doodoodoodoodoooooooo.....

i have the sony touch eReader. best thing ever. SO many features and options, and yes, it's true, it actually feels like you're reading a book, not some backlit screen like the iPad. with mine (PRS-600 is the model #) there are expandable memory card slots (SD cards, great for camera people!) that can hold photos and music. yes, the Sony plays mp3's and has a headphone jack. it also displays photos (kind of crappy but it's a reader...not a laptop/monitor) you can highlight passages in books, bookmark your page, make the words bigger or smaller, double-tap ANY word and a built-in dictionary comes up with it's definition...

the model of reader i have does NOT have WiFi, and i wanted non-Wifi specifically. i already have too many damn devices to connect to the internet, and i wanted a stand-alone reader. that's all i do with it.

i even outfitted it with a stylish leather case. i couldn't love this thing anymore. who doesn't love having thousands of books in your bag, for under a pound?

I'm a pretty voracious reader and I travel quite a bit. I got tired of lugging several books with me or buying books along the trip so I bought the original Nook. Not long after my girlfriend bought an iPad and while I felt like the Nook was a better reading experience, I liked some aspects of the iPad. Eventually I convinced myself that I needed color and bought a Nook Color. What I've discovered is that many of the books that I read (mostly older travel) are out or print and unavailable for the Nook, so I reverted to carrying books again. All of this suggests to me that you make sure that the bulk of what you read is available electronically before you pull the trigger.

Many of those out of print books can be found on the internet for free and with free software converted to whatever format your particular reader uses. Take a look at calibre software which is great for format conversion.

I like my kindle, the e-ink screen without backlight is nice to look at. it does exactly what I need it to do.
