All very true points, BUT doesn't anyone want to mention the catch-22?
How is one supposed to know if they are ready and or able to do it? With out trying? Not everyone can use friends or websites to judge their work. Hell I have seen some "pro's" do some really bad work. I am an ordained minister that does weddings. I gave away my first 20 of them for free! Explained I was new to doing them and worked with the couples to make it a memorable experience. Learned a lot and most went off without a hitch. Now the same can be said for photography can it not? I am not saying that it is true for all, thankfully I am smart enough to know that I am no where near good enough to charge for any type of work. Not in a long shot, and there are those who are not smart enough and they I think are the ones making it hard on the rest of the group to get ahead. Or is it just a elite members club that doesn't want to share the cool aid, and have the pool of available clients diluted? I opened a retail computer store in a town near my house, first year took a 30k loss ON PURPOSE, to prove a point. There was another guy in town, arrogant as all get out, over charged and took forever. Well I did everything at COST, ZERO labor fee, bring it in, I'd fix it and hand it back. within a year he had lost so much business he came in and asked why I was doing it? I told him. turned out he really didn't realize a lot of it and actually embraced the changes he needed to make. I sold the shop a year later and to this day there are 2 shops still in that town. Very happy. Yes I was a jerk, but I do not like arrogance at all. Some people need to come down a notch. others need to be brought up a couple. So far from my reading on forums, it seems the photographers on the net like to think of themselves as entitled to something, well some deserve that and some don't, but where is the line? JMO take it as you will
