Default Monitors

I'm looking to purchase a quality Graphic Display (Monitor).

What are the best ones out there and why?

What are the best ones for the low to mid range. I know some can get into the thousands $$. I would like to get a really nice one but not into the thousands.

Any suggestions?

I have heard good things on the Apple 22 inch and the LaCie models. I looked at the LaCie and not sure I can afford that level

thanks

Some recommended models:
  • Dell 2209WA
  • NEC EA231WMi
  • HP LP2275w
  • Dell 2408WFP
  • HP LP2475w
The LP2275w and 2408WFP are S-PVA displays. The other three are IPS displays. S-PVA will generally give better contrast with blacker blacks, while IPS will generally give better color and better color consistency from corner to corner.

The least expensive of these is the Dell 2209WA. If you call Dell and talk to one of their Small Business sales reps, you can probably get it for closer to $230 (US) instead of the list price of $299. Their Small Business reps deal with individuals, too—you don't need to be a small business.

Well...admitting I'm an apple guy first. Although from long experience, not from obsession.

If you are using an apple system, then the built in calibration tools are far superior, and the new LED displays are MAGNIFICENT.

Also, my local professional photo lab uses...you guessed it...all Apple monitors and computers. When I go in, they final print the images from a PC (something to do with special drivers for some of their six-figure-cost giant format printers they have), but the guy says "Don't pay attention to the PC monitor. It's not accurate."

All qualified, you can still get the $200 monitor calibration software and dongle and any decent monitor will do.

Understand that the brightness gamut of your prints is actually smaller than any decent monitor. "whiter whites and blacker blacks" will not necessarily translate to the paper.

Also. I will NEVER buy HP again. They just don't "get it". Dell...yeah they generally have acceptable hardware for pretty cheap. Won't argue that.

Thanks for your help Doug. I guess anyone of those listed would be ones to really look at. I have about a month to shop around. What are the best places to purchase from?

thanks FormElement for your suggestions as well. Lots to look at over the next month.

thanks again
