So after 36 years of trying I've finally seen a Kingfisher in the wild... Now I just need to sort myself out and get to shoot it.. Anyone got any good tips??

Patience, patience. Watch it for awhle and figure out where it perches and then sit and wait. Wear camo, how long of a lens do you have?

Most birds especially birds of prey, have favorite spots where they sit and wait. As windrider said find that and then, you must sit and wait! Best of luck.
AND welcome to DPS.

If possible, avoid mid-day sun, and shoot with the sun at your back (or at least off to one side). Watch your backgrounds, too.

Good luck and have fun with it.

Most of the guys who shoot kingfishers say use a hide, and target a branch that hangs out over the water. Try googling "kingfisher photography tips". You'll get loads of pages, like this one:

I saw a Belted Kingfisher sitting on a wire near the freeway once, but never caught sight of it again as I went to hunt it down with camera in hand. Good luck!

Those suckers are fast! They don't stay in one place long and they spook easy.
Camera on AFC and multi point sensor (51 point 3D on nikon).

Hi again. Thanx for all the tips. I'm using a Nikon D90 with a Tamron AF70-300 lense so will really have to get pretty close to the bird to shoot it well.. My biggest problem is that the it hangs out right next to a very busy footpath..
Thanx agian and I hope you all have a Happy New Year...
