Default NG Contest

The point is, sure, maybe you would give up the copyright IF you won the contest, but when I go back and read the rule again - they clearly state you give up copyright JUST BY SUBMITTING your image. That means you cant even submit it elsewhere - EVER!

Granting license if you win a contest is one thing, but giving up ownership of the image forever just by submitting that image? Seems to smell of 5 day old fish, as someone already said here.

I, like many of you, have entered the same image in more than one contest. With NG's rules, you can't do that - ever.

Anyway, no thanks, maybe keep my images limited to local and regional exhibits and contests. My desire is to share these works anyway, not try to get rich through photos I have taken. Even NG doesn't have enough cache if they hold a gun to my head.

Gotta agree whole-heartedly with you photobyfelix. I'm definitely not a fan of these sort of rights grab things.

The thing I can't get my head around, is why they would need copyright? Surely a simple non-exclusive use license for the image would be enough.

in this case, an exclusive license would be close to what they're looking for. I think they want the copyright so they can license the image out to whoever they want however they want with no strings attached.

Travel Photographer of the Year contest simply states:

Quote:
You & Your Copyright,TPOTY & Reproduction Rights
25. TPOTY does not make any claim whatsoever on the copyright of YOUR images. The copyright will, at all times, be retained by the photographer and, where an image or images are reproduced by TPOTY, the photographer will be credited.
26. The organisers and sponsors reserve the right to free reproduction and exhibition of entered images in all media, but only in connection with this competition. Where image reproduction is unrelated to the competition then a fee will be agreed with the photographer in advance.
27. Competition rights – all rights to the Travel Photographer of the Year competition are copyrighted and owned by the organisers, C.I.Coe/Imagos.
Simple and to the point.
