Default split scanned photos up

hey all i am in need of some advice, over the summer i have scanned in the family photos and to save time i did it 4 at a time.

the result is i now have a few hundred photos that are actually 4 (and some cases 2-3) so what i want is a quick and easy way of splitting them up

any suggestions?

i have photoshop elements + cs3 and gimp also have paint shop pro photo X2 but would prefer not to use it as its not installed and need to reinstall OS over xmas

The only thing I can think of is either manually cropping each picture and saving them separately, or is it possible to create some kind of action in photoshop that will crop the picture and save the 4 images once run.

I cant even think of a batch tool that will do multiple crops from one image unless theres one out there you can run scripts on? and create a script to do what your after.
