Default Should I pack my zoom lens?

I'm catching a plane to Oklahoma tomorrow for a 2 day trip, and I hate checking luggage so I will have everything (including my camera) as carry on.

The question I'm pondering, will it be worth it to bring my 70-200mm lens or just stick with my kit lens (18-55mm) for the trip?

I don't foresee me going out just to shoot photographs during this time, but you never know what opportunities may arise, or when driving back from Oklahoma I might decide to take a detour because I see something that has potential.

So yeah, do you think I should pack my zoom lens as well, or just keep it tucked safely away at home for the 2 day trip?

I have a take everything policy - but I have a big backpack and would rather forego spare clothes than miss a shot

What you take depends on what you might be shooting. You've got landscapes covered.

I'd say, if you've got room, take it. If not, don't.

I guess it would depend on what I must leave out to make room for the lens. If nothing, then take it.

Tough choice, depends what you are going to shoot. While others don't like it, that is why I love my Nikon 18-200VR lens - it is small lightweight and perfect for this type of use. When I have it I never have the wrong focal length lens on the camera.

Well, yes, you should pack a zoom lens.

Now, if you're asking if you should pack your telephoto, then if you use the focal length, pack it.

I ended up packing light enough that my entire camera bag fit into my luggage (which was one carry-on duffel bag). I did not use it at all on the trip though, but it was there just in case.

I got one of my Christmas gifts already, a new camera bag! Tamrac 3375 I still need to take it out and test it, but so far it is nice.
