Default Question..

My goal is to be able to take nice photographs, but not professionally... I am learning my camera also.
I do have one questions tho.... How many of you take several shots and 'hate' them? I sometimes think i see something of interest and then take the picture but it looks like poo poo.. so I delete it... I am not a portrait person, nor have accomplished any good landscape pictures.. .I do like the Macro's and Pet picture taking...
I know processing is probably a big or little part of making that picture perfect.
Being a beginner, I sometimes think the harder I try the worse the picture.. did this happen to you? I know it takes yrs of practice, equiptment etc to become a photographer.. I have to totally admire everyones photos that i see here on DPH...

Yes, it definitely happens (probably more than I'd like to admit sometimes ). I definitely don't post all of my shots by any means. I don't post the ones I hate, the ones I don't like, or the ones that just plain didn't turn out.

I do think that post-processing is a reasonable part of my workflow. There's nothing wrong with it, and I find that 9/10 times it can move a good picture to a great picture. Of course, it's having that one to start out with, but you'll get there. I think you just have to remember that not every picture will be a keeper

haha... it didn't happen to me on dhp, but here on dps it happens to me all the time!!..

But seriously, you're not alone - well, there's a few "perfect every time" photographers I know, and that's only because they don't show anyone the ones they throw away :-)

Try and try again, don't be disheartened and don't try "too hard" it will come.

I take boat loads of shots i don't like!!...if i could only figure out how to make money at it!!!

Anyway - at first your ratio of good to bad will probably be skewed to the bad side...then it you'll start to take more good photos than bad...then your eye for detail will improve and it will shift back the other way and so on...
I think most good photographers are critical of their own work. When we look at the same piece they "hate", we say "wow, amazing" - cause we aren't where they are yet in our critical eye. Part of that whole internal love it -hate it dichotomy is what makes it art not science
Btw, maybe don't show anyone your 'bad' photos but keep them for a while. It's good to look back at where you were and how you have progressed.

Hah-ha-ha
too true..

the more you learn.. the more you realise that there is so much more to learn!

i take heaps of rubbish.. and the occasional "nice" one i manage to scrape together from inbetween the junk.

i hate to say it.. just practice.. make it fun, relax, little and often.
get critique, read books, put thise new tips into action.. and before you know it people will be saying "WOW, you must have a really nice camera"

sometimes i go out trying to get a good picture, shooting selectively. other times i shoot like it's a machine gun. on both occasion i will only have 1-4 good shots. it's very infrequant that i'll return home thinking i've struck gold. i am however always looking for the next chance to take a good shot. i have a number of shots taken by others (with my camera) that i wish i had gotten.

Something no one has mentioned yet. It could be that you are your own worst critic. That, too, happens to us all. I suggest posting in the critique section and get some input. A great photographer once said, " Only one in a thousand pictures you take will move you"
Remember, learning is fun. Shoot, shoot, shoot and ask.

A 10% success rate is about average.
