Default Suggestions Please

Hi All

I introduced myself a few weeks ago and since have been busy or not well, so haven't visited much - I'm having a little stress out at the moment - Its my son's Year 10 formal tonight and he is not photogenic AT ALL but has agreed to let me take some shots of him before we leave as well as some of him and his friends before they go inside. There will be around 5 or 6 teenage boys all dressed up in their suits. I'm still learning and using Manual mode but am wondering what I should shoot in this afternoon as I don't think teenage boys are going to stand still and pose while I set up my camera to get the settings right.

I will be using a Canon 450D body, a Canon 24 - 135mm f4 L lens and a 580 EX II flash. It will be around 5:30pm and it is day light savings. Should I shoot in AV or TV mode to ensure I get the shot - this is one night that I won't get back and I really want to get some good shots!

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

I'd definately shoot in a setting you're more comfortable with. I'm new to DSLRs and wouldn't hesitate to shoot in Program mode for a special event that I wouldn't get another chance at shooting.

Good Luck.

To insure you get the shots you want, I would probably just use the P or Auto mode. Their nothing wrong with it and so another photographer from this forum has said, "camera companies spend million of dollars to develop these functions", theirs no shame in using them.

Hi Oldworf

I have heard there is a hiccup with using AV mode with the flash that I have....will have to experiment before i head off for the shoot.

Thanks to you all for your comments. Think I might turn the dial between AV & P and see what I come up with.

set your flash to high sync mode and tinker before you actually take pics.
