Hello all! This is my first post on the forums here, although I have been a long time subscriber to the DPS RSS feed.
I have been interested in photography for quite a few years, but my little sister is just starting to get interested. I'd love to get her a book for Christmas that covers all the basics. I want something that has a lot of pictures in it, but also meaningful content. If anyone could suggest something, I would really appreciate it. |

It would depend on the camera she's getting. If she's getting a point and shoot, a book on how to manually adjust exposure levels would be pointless.
With that in mind, there are two books that I feel helped me more than any other thus far. Amazon.com: Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) (9780817463007): Bryan Peterson: Books and Amazon.com: Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography (Updated Edition) (9780817441814): Bryan Peterson: Books The first one is very helpful if your trying to get shots out of auto mode. The second doesn't really focus (pun intended) on that as much. I found it very helpful on color coordination and combination. Depending on what type of photography shes interested in, you could also look into some of the books that discus light, or poses for portraits. Depending on her age, she may also be looking to do more edgier things. |

Good advice! Peterson's books are a good foundation for any beginner and a good read even for more advanced photographers.
