Hi everyone
I dropped my Canon 1000D today (off a dresser, onto my head, which hurt), smashing the UV filter and knocking the focussing part of the 18-55mm kit lens in, so it wouldnt move. Figuring that it was a lost cause, so I might as well try to fix it, I forced the lens back into alignment again.... now it seems to work, and the autofocus functions, but the zoom ring is a lot stiffer than it used to be and I am worried I might cause the camera harm by continuing to use the lens... any thoughts? Obviously I am gutted about this, having finally managed to get my hands on a DSLR recently after a long wait! Any helpful comments appreciated! |

That sucks. I dropped my 10-22 less than a week after purchasing it.
How's the head? Must be a very tall dresser. You can send it to Canon and they will give you an estimate of repair. It will probably be right around 100 dollars, not sure for the UK though. Check their website for repair info.

Thanks PnwGuy. I guess I can send it to Canon for repair. I just wondered if there is likely to be any problem using the lens as it is... maybe a stupid question but is there anything I could do to loosen up the stiff zoom ring? Or is it a pro repair job?

If it were me I'd send it in. That way I wouldn't wonder if the crappy shots were due to lens damage. I'd have only myself to blame.

Have you got a 'local camera shop for local people' type place near you? Might be worth popping in and getting them to give it a once over before sending it off if you do.
Oh and owee for your noggin!

Pro repair is your best bet, or bite the bullet and invest in new glass.
Hope you're head is ok!
