Default Schmap

Anyone else had a request from these to use your picture that they have seen on Flickr?

There's no cash involved and they are obviously running their site as a business and so looking to make a profit. I am undecided to agree. Hell, the image is on Flickr for all to see so why not? But then, they could be making money out of my image... what to do?

This is what they sent me:

Schmap: London Photo Short-list

Hi Andrew,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has been short-listed for inclusion in the ninth edition of our Schmap London Guide, to be published mid-December 2009.

Link was here.

Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Browse online or download the eighth edition of our Schmap London Guide.

While we offer no payment for publication, many photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.

Our submission deadline is Friday, December 4. If you happen to be reading this message after this date, please still click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are updated frequently - photos submitted after this deadline will be considered for later releases).

I got a request from them- I told them "yes". They are asking permission to use your picture...as they should.

They did what they said they would do...

Ditto on Cap'n Jack's comment.

My photo ended up being used, which I think is pretty cool. It's always nice when someone appreciates your work.

I got a request from them to use a photo in their Maui Guidebook. I said yes, and it made it into the guidebook.

Do a quick search for "schmap" on this site and you'll find they have come up several times. Since they are only using small versions of the pictures and do give a link back, most people (including myself) have been happy to allow their image to be used in this case. I guess the payback, if you need it, is that their guides (available for free at Schmap - Guides, Widgets and Mapping Solutions for PC, Mac and the Mobile Internet ) are well illustrated and there for you to use.

Thanks all for replying - I'm happy for them to use my image otherwise why put it on flickr for everyone to see. But ... it has to be chosen first!

I was asked also for an Old Montreal picture.

It is ok with me.
Because they ask for permission and they give the credit to the people that are shooting the pictures.

To see what they do- see here:

My picture in in the upper right.

Ironically, this was the first "real" picture with my new DLSR...others I took prior to this were practicing how to use it.
