Default What's Santa called in Australia?

No its not a joke lol! My 10 year old is a living, breathing encyclopedia and one of the things he said today is that in Australia they don't believe in Santa/Father Christmas as at Christmas time in Australia the weather is too hot and Santa will get too hot in his Santa suit so they call him something else but can't remember who he is called.

Is he right any Australians?!

Ps he is really clever and got star of the day for doing an animation on one of the school computers all about the second world war with Hitler saying "I'll get you next time Churchill" and the American's dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and a great big mushroom cloud coming up. He showed it too me today and it blew me away!! He doesn't get his intelligence from me thats for sure!

Well, in NZ he's still Santa (just went to the Santa parade the other weekend) and he's still dressed in the full winter garb (sometimes you see Christmas cards with Santa in shorts etc) Though if your son knows where NZ is on a map and that it's right by Aus, he's way ahead of some people I've encountered

Swag Man perhaps?

That seems to be what this article is saying. See the fifth paragraph. Who knows if that's accurate, though?

Thank you for replying.

I asked and he said yeah Swag Man! Thanks natek313 that was a very interesting article.

Brown Akubra? a blue singlet and long baggy shorts? Four wheeledrive, dingoes? Slightly different to Saint Nick we have seen since the coca cola ads of the 30's.

Funny- I was in Thailand over Christmas once. It was odd to me to see butterflies and lizards while looking at a traditional USA Santa in a store window.

As a proud Aussie, I can tell you that we do have Santa down here. He is still called Santa and still wears the regular clothes however, on Christmas day you often see him surfing!

There is also the Christmas song "6 White Boomers" which might help you understand our wildlife at this time of year.

Oh, aslo sometimes you see him wearing board shorts and a singlet with thongs (aka pluggers)

Hope this helps!

For most Australians, Santa comes to town. But if you're in the right part of town and of the right faith, you're able to double up with a visit from St Nicholas on the 5th Dec (if I remember correctly).

Your son has his heart in the right place, at least, but no, Santa exists.

Christmas is in summer, here, but it doesn't make a difference because it doesn't snow throughout the major cities anytime during the year anyway.

Admittedly, the hype of many things are lessened... we hardly 'celebrate' Halloween or Thanksgiving (barely anyone for both and especially the latter).

But Christmas is celebrated and Santa is still a Christmas figure, yes.
