I feel as though watermarks can sometimes detract from a photo. Proving it's mine is simple--I like very few of my photos, so I have several that are just very slightly different than the one I ultimately choose. Also, if "steals" a photo to hang it up somewhere, I'd be flattered, no matter what level of expertise I am (I love the GNU public license).

As I've stated above, I am not a fan of watermarking in most cases. However, if you have a burning desire to protect / deface (delete as applicable ) your photos, you might be interested in a new service called Picmarkr which is a free, online tool for doing this.
