I shot great multitudes of high school band members last Friday.
All the girls wanted to see their shots which took up time I didn't really have, but I still showed them. I got to thinking how nice it would be to have had my laptop tethered to my camera, so they could be checking out their shots while I was still shooting. Going wireless would be great, but not cheap. I googled tethering, and came up with 3 versions of software that got good reviews, and were priced right. Then I saw a site offering free software. I checked it out, watched the video on how to use it, and gave it a shot. It works perfectly. The images come up in the folder you have to create in around 2 seconds. Then I just click on them which opens them with ACDsee. The only thing I did differently from the video was have the program in a different folder that my pictures would go to. Pretty cool for studio work, plus your images are loaded on your PC, and camera card at the same time. The site also has free camera control software, that you can adjust your camera settings, and shoot from your PC. Free Tethered Shooting Script for Nikon — DiyPhotoBits.com — A few bits and pieces about photography The site says its temporarily unavailable for some reason, but I never had any problems with it. Top notch! I've been looking for a free app to do this for ages.... Nikon want over £100 for their version.
Just tried with my D70s on Vista and it manages jpegs no problem. Can't get it to shoot raw though. I'm going to have a read through the site and see if there is any extra settings I need to tweak. Great find!!! DHG |

Just to throw it out there for the Mac users, I love Sofortbild - Mac Tethered Shooting. Also free, works great, and can import either just to a folder or right into your image managing app (e.g. Lightroom). I've used the program for quite a while and really like it.

I just did that my self for the grad shoot a couple weeks ago. I used again when I did the hair styling shoot, it was very helpful & it was very cool.

Sure it does! I used it plenty when I had mine... You just have to make sure it's in PTP mode like BobC said.

I have also used gphoto2 quite effectively. But, I'm always on the lookout for new options, so this thread has been quite helpful!
