Default question: wet memory card

Suggestions please!

I am the queen of stupid accidents. Yesterday, I spilled a large iced tea on the dash of my car, it dripped (poured) off into the change cubby where I had an extra memory card. It got soaked before I rescued it, shook it out as best I could, then placed it under a lamp to speed drying. So, I am asking, is it ruined? What damage might occur if I "test" it in my camera? It's a rather expensive, high capacity card which I do not want to discard unneccessarily..... and yes, I promise to be more particular with my photo gear in the future.

I ran one through the washer a few weeks ago. I let it dry for a few days and then tested it. All was fine.

Clean the contacts of any sugar (just wash it off) if needed, let it dry, you should be good to go. Don't touch the contacts directly, let it air-dry (avoid static electricity).

Agreed.

Since it's solid-state, it SHOULD be OK. That's not to say it couldn't sort something, but if you give it plenty of time to dry before testing it should be fine. Definitely don't put it in the camera until you're absolutely sure it's dry. Moisture in the card slot is a huge problem. Several 1D3s went down at the Super Bowl a few years back when water from jacket sleeves fell into the card slot during swaps.

Thanks for the replies. It's encouraging that everyone agrees the card may be saved. So, I am to wet it again with clear water to wash away the sticky sugar residue? That's scarey but not as bad as tossing it into the trash. It should have been enough punishment to clean the mess I made in the car!

I would rinse it off and then sit it in a cup of uncooked white rice for a day - that draws out moisture - I tested it on the blackberry below - worked fine :-0)

Gin and Blackberry, Sir?
