I have to admit I use the auto mode, but I as I learn more about the camera I will experiment with it and see which I like best. On my 35mm I always go manually usually at 100 unless it a sporting event or action shot.

Default manual

Manual. I am usually 200 or 400 depending upon the situation but will go outside of that as needed.

Once I learned how to manually set my exposure (which by the way is very easy to learn but a challenge to master) I started setting everything else on manual. I just have to remember to check all the settings, or to set them back to typical settings after a shoot.

Almost always manual - but I also almost never move it over 100.

That said, this weekend was the first time I used 'Auto' mode on my camera - mostly due to a lack of a tripod (or monopod) and bad lighting - just to try and get the clearest shots I could.

I can set up my camera to have automatic ISO settings? Wow, the things you miss out on when you don't get the manual...

Anyway, most of what I shoot is sports and those are almost always at 1600. I need the speed, and with the lighting we have it's about the only thing that gets the job done.

The only exception for me is with an experiment I'm doing. I'm setting my XT on full auto for that because I need good control shots.

I set it manually. I set the shutter speed on 80 - the minimum for my lens if you want focused pictures of little boys running around. Then I adjust the ISO as necessary to get the proper exposure - the camera selects the aperture, usually something around 1.8 because that is how low my lens will go and I need all the light I can get.

Default Manual VS Automatic ISO

I love my Sony A-700 but the lowest ISO setting in auto mode is 200. Where possible I like to use 100.

I'm always in manual mode, as for White Balance setting (the later I can adjust in post-processing).

The drawback of this is that I sometimes happen to shoot in bright daylight with a 1600ISO setting I've forgotten to reset and wonder why I still have overexposed shots at 1/8000s f/8

A Nikon D70s, a few lenses, add flashguns to your taste. Stir well. Serve warm.

I use manual settings for everything as much as I can. Only when indoor situations are too dark might I use flash and auto to get a decent picture as quickly as possible, when time demands it (I know this last part was off topic).

ISO is the only thing about photography that I understand 100% so I set this manually. I prefer 100 as standard but will use 200-400 if necessary.

I want to experiment with ISO of 400+ but for most things my Sony Alpha seems to be very noisy at these levels.
