I am a self-employed computer guy and most of my work is onsite so I keep a lot of my photo gear with me, in my trunk. I'm always finding new places or seeing different things along the way. Unfortnately I usually don't have time to shoot but sometimes I'll make the time if I see something interesting enough. Or I'll note it and come back a different time.
In my Slingshot 300 I keep both bodies with lens attached, usually my 24-105 on the Rebel and the 70-200 on the 40D and one of my flashes in the bag. I have another little bag that I keep my 10-22, 100-400, and filters in. I have my monopod and tripod along as well. I usually have boots and a knee pad too. Then I have all my computer parts and my laptop. Man if anybody ever broke into my trunk....

HI everyone, thanks for your replies - it has been interesting for me to read them, and where other people are at. This has been a great discussion. At the end of the day I think it really depends on the person what they take, their work, and what their aims are for their photography - whether just an occasional shooter or a professional. I can't see myself always carrying my camera everywhere.....but you never know. I want to improve, and to do this I know means practice, practice. So taking a camera every day makes sense - to seize the opportunity when it presents itself. I think my PowerShot will be the best option for me as it is a very versatile camera, with a pro level lens, and takes great super macro as well as having a pretty good zoom. It is a great all-round traveller's camera if you don't want to lug a lot of gear.
I agree it can be a pain when people always expect you to be the one taking photos - for myself I would rather enjoy, for instance, present opening at Christmas and birthdays, and enjoy the moment, rather than taking photos. thanks everyone. Happy snapping!

i have my Sony Cybershot P&S with me at all times, it's the DSCW220, a GREAT little "automatic" (no aperture or shutterspeed choices) camera.
as for my DSLR, when i go out shooting, i bring my whole kit. when i go somewhere *thinking* i might wish i had my DSLR, but not going out for a fullblown photowalk, i just bring my Nikon D90 and the kit lens, as it's the most versatile, covering a wide range of focal points |

Since I do publicity for a living, I carry my dslr with me back and forth to work. When I am not working or going out specifically to shoot photos, I only carry my cellphone.
