Default GIMP vs. Photoshop

Before you go blasting away with Ford vs. Chevy, Mac vs. PC, junk... I have yet to see a thread that polls DPS to see which editing programs among our members are most popular.

Actually, not too easy to answer because at one time or another, I've used them all as well as Picasa. I chose Photoshop because I use it the most and in that category I use CS3 and occasionally Elements, but not Lightroom which I don't have.

Should've included Lightroom

I find Lightroom to be good for 98% of my photos. I only use PSE when I want to do something a little more complex.

Picasa was nice too, but it's nothing compared to Lightroom.

Ironically, I have a free version of Paintshop Pro X, but don't use it.

Yep, definitely should've included Lightroom (and maybe Aperture and iPhoto as well).

In any case, I mainly use Lightroom with the Nik plugins and I also use Photoshop.

I use picasa for "family pictures"...quick and easy and very good . Gimp however is my main choice...it's free(LOL) and I can do everything I want to do, and more. Douglas

The only reason why someone would use GIMP is that it's free shareware, whereas Photoshop would cost you at least $495.00. Sure photoshop has more bells and whistles, it's what the industry standard is set to. If I sent an editor a GIMP file, they wouldn't take me seriously as a photographer.

You definitely got that right. Having learned on Gimp (and not being a journalist), it works just fine for me.
