Hm... not that I've been around long, but I guess it's because it's a stylistic decision rather than a technique or a discipline, per se.

I disagree. Sometimes is takes a different approach and technique to get a good b&w (that is if you are shooting in camera). Editing to b&w is different. If you are actually shooting b&w, not all shots that would look good in color will be as nice in b&w. I think b&w forces you to look at the light more. So yes, I think there is a "technique" involved in shooting b&w, to a degree.

That makes sense. Granted, I don't do much black and white photography yet, so I wouldn't rightly know. Still, it's not exactly what I meant.

My point is that any kind of shot can be black and white, whether it's a portrait, a landscape, or even a macro. So I feel it's more of a function of the photographer's taste than the actual "kind" of photograph you're taking, if you understand what I mean.

Another point to raise along that line... would black and white portraiture belong in the Black and White forum, or the Portraiture forum? The same applies to other kinds of photos.

I think it'd be cool to have a separate forum discussing the technique as you describe it, though. But how viable is it as a subject?

It's interesting as a mental exercise, if nothing else.

@Quintin: That would be a matter of personal preference. You could put in the portrait or b&w section as it fits the criteria of both. You are thinking to hard!

What about sepia? Or duotone? Love the idea but control-wise it seems a little problemattical unless you allow double posting in the monochrome forum and the respective format forum.
