Default What do you do for a living?

We are all here on this forum with at least one thing in common: photography! But we come together from all around the world, all different ages, different interests, etc, and I think there are only a few that are able to make a living exclusively from photography.

What about those that aren't professional photographers? What do you do day in and day out to buy your gear, feed your family, pay your bills, etc etc. What's your career right now? Even if you are a professional photographer, post what you do to make that income..weddings? Photojournalism? Whatever your job, is it what you love or is it a means to an end? Are you working towards something else and what you are doing now is just a transition job?

I'm interested in seeing what careers/jobs everyone's got. I guess I'll start: I'm a behavior therapist for kids diagnosed with autism.

What do YOU do?

Interesting thread. I'm a mathematician -- specifically, a grad student. I make my living teaching at the university (calculus, pre-calc, differential equations, etc.), but my ultimate job is to produce original research.

Me - typesetter/printer although I haven't printed anything for years. I spend all my day on a Mac creating books and journals about entomology. And wishing I had more work as it seems to be drying up!

I'm a teaching assistant in a school for children with learning difficulties (ages 4-11). I only work 10 hours a week which suits me fine. The rest of the time I'm learning how to be a successful photographer specialising in informal family fun and documentary style weddings etc.

I am also a qualified Life Coach.

Hmm the sentence on only working 10 hours a week isn't strictly true as I am a Mother of 2 children who are 6 and 10 so I have many "roles" such as "teacher" "psychologist" "therapist" "nurse" etc etc 24/7

Maths was my WORST subject at school. It didn't help that I was physically abused by my teacher when I was 7 - thats a whole other story.

Anyway, I developed a phobia anything maths orientated and avoided it at all costs throughout my life until I started working at this school I am now.

I had to do a maths test I got 97% right!! Just goes to prove that your beliefs aren't always the reality!!

I'm not so stupid afterall.

I'm currently teaching a class which is all about real, interesting math. We started by talking about different ideas of "fairness" (such as, ways to vote or to split up an inheritance). After that we worked with credit cards, home loans, etc. for a while, and right now we're analyzing gambling games. It's a lot of fun, and no calculus in sight.

Yay!! Congratulations. Math really can be fun. I think that the biggest misconception is that math is just a series of rules to follow. My work is really to invent new mathematical ideas -- set down some new rules, follow their consequences, and see what happens. It's actually quite a lot of fun.

I am retired. My main career was in nursing, which culminated in a position as Lecturer in Nursing at a teaching hospital/university.
