Good stuff - good to hear its being worked on.

It got you to read the thread though.

The post said you had to go get the image URL, not the photopage URL. It used flickr as an example and it didn't mention how to create the link, which for most web users is not something they are aware how to do. Thats my point, and it seems flcikr's point as well since they are working on it with Darren.

So whether it was being encourgaed or DPS simply facilitated the issue, with people being unaware of their personal responsibility, it was a fact that a lot of people went and posted images from flickr that did not link back.

I just posted a comment with an image on that post, and I easily included a link back to the Picasa Web Album I took the photo from. I clicked the link to add the img tag, then I manually added an anchor tag with a link back to the Picasa Web Album.

Does it require a basic knowledge of HTML? Yes. But it's an extremely routine piece of code, and anyone with the most elementary knowledge of web design can construct an anchor tag like that. Hardly "bizarre" if you ask me.

Where else have you seen a requirement to have BB code and HTML used together. I call it bizare. It certainly isn't expacted behaviour and on the web if it doesn't work as expected then it may as well not work.

How many people do you actually think have "elementary knowledge of web design"? 1%, 10% its not many. Add this to the standard ways of doing it, either all HTML or all BBCode don't work and you have a right mess.

UPDATE: Working in conjunction with Flickr we've now tweaked this feature so that you can get your picture in by doing one of two things:

1. post the picture's actual URL
2. post the flickr page URL that the picture is on

We're also now able to authomatically link the FLickr pictures embedded back to your Flickr page which hopefully will send a little traffic your way and which makes us compliant with Flickr's TOS. This happens auto-magically with the help of Flickr's API

Embed Images in Our Comments Section – NEW FEATURE

It is done using a pop up dialogue box where you can paste the img URL. This creates some BB Code IMG tags that embed the image in the post. The post even shows how you need the img URL ending in .jpg rather than they photopage URL and uses flickr as an example.

However it is nearly impossible to follow the flickr terms of service when using this feature. The Flickr TOS state that if you use the image file hosted on flickrs servers on an external site you must link back to the photopage containing the image. DPS should at least acknowledge this in the blog post but I would sugest it is imperative people can simply and easily link their images. Allowing the HTML that flickr provide to be posted would be the easiest way.

Come one DPS, get you act together, at least don't use flickr as your example.
Fletch I like most of your posts, but this seems like it's a bit off base. Flickr has code. there are several pages on these forums that tell you (via screen shots and everything) how to add them in this way.

stop stirring things up.

Considering the response of flickr and Darren, I think he had a legitimate concern.

Yeah for flickr and DPS. A really elegant solution to a awkward problem. Not only do images now comply with the TOS but its actually even easier to embed the files. Flickrs API is a wonderfull thing.
