The way I read it, the proper term would be disposable - either way, it's easier/cheaper to replace than the lens.

Sorry Ken, can't agree with you there.
Firstly, weather proofing - most of Canon's L glass needs a filter on the lens to complete the weather proofing; and, Secondly - cleaning - I paid an extraordinary amount of money to have the nice people at Canon polish and coat my lenses to levels of precision I can't comprehend - if I'm going to be cleaning the dust and salt off my $2500 lens for the lifetime I'm hoping it will last, then I'd much rather be cleaning it off a replaceable filter than wearing the coatings off my lenses. Each of my lenses is filtered with a high quality filter to minimise the impact on image quality (personally, I prefer B+W MRC filters). They're a $120 investment in protecting my $1000+ lenses.
