Default Problems with "File Size".

I would like to use "Share your Shots" more often but some of my pics will not upload due to being too big. My Q is - "What contributes to the size of a picture?"
I have analysed several (10) of my shots and the one thing that seems to make the size shoot up is the aperture. E.G. all other facts being equal, if aperture goes from 8.0 to 5.6 then the file size goes from 9456KB to 10327KB. Does this mean I could never show you a shot that I was proud of if I took it with an Av value of 5.6 (or less)? Look forward to your replies and learning a bit more. PAUL

Also look at what is in the photo, a picture of a single object is going to be smaller then a picture of a densly wooded background, due to increased color variations etc. If your images are getting rejected, look at the size of the image. Is the longest side greater than 800 pix (the max for jpeg)..or if you have a flickr account simply link to the photo which essentially bypases the size requirement of attachments.
From the FAQ
"In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected"

Aperture has NOTHING to do with file size. Thanks for the chuckle, though.

The SYS section of the forums only allows images up to 800pixels on the longest side (600 displays best). Just re-sizing your image down and doing a "Save as..." and uploading that should be more than enough to get it down to the right file size.

If you're frequently having problems uploading to the user gallery on the site because of File size, might I suggest using Flickr, Picasaweb, or Zooomr? All are free and none of them have the same strict file size limits that we need to have on the forum. There are also directions for how to post from these sites in the FAQs.

Hi there, maybe nothing but also look at the type of image your wanting to post, RAW and TIFF are pretty large files where as Jpeg are not. Also dependant on the type of editing software your using you can use the "Save for the web" icon which help to reduce sizes as well. Hope that helps.
David.

Thanks rebel, I saw that but don't yet know how to reduce the image size. Will work on it. God bless for now. PAUL

Thanks Os, see my note to rebel above. Is re-sizing down the same as cropping? BTW, always glad to entertain! God bless for now. PAUL

Hi max, you might as well say to me "are you really trying to download a file the size of 9.5 rice puddings", and it will still make no more sense to me. Could't agree more with you though, the Lord is good! God bless for now. PAUL

Thanks Nicole. I opened up a flickr site a couple of weeks ago and I am just getting used to it. I am up to my limit on free time, so I will have to pay the annual fee for unlimited use. Will do that. Appreciate your useful comments. God bless for now. PAUL

Hello Harry. I have never ventured as far as RAW etc. yet, but all in good time. I have seen a save for the web option somewhere. I'll click it next time and see where it takes me. Being new not only to photography, but also computers, I worry about clicking things I am not familiar with. Thank you for your help. God bless for now. PAUL

Resizing is very different from cropping. In cropping, you recompose the picture, chopping bits off to make it smaller. Resizing shrinks the whole picture to give an effect like standing further away from it (at the cost of losing detail the more you reduce it).

It is an interesting observation that aperture affects file size. It doesn't, on the face of it, sound right but I suppose that the increased area of smooth graduations in a picture taken with a wide-open aperture could be harder to compress (assuming a very high JPEG quality setting).

It will be resizing you need though to make an image from your camera suitable to post on here.

Thanks for that Wulf. I am beginning to understand now, and your explanation has taken me much further. God bless for now. PAUL
