You dont say how old your computer is or what programs you have in it but here is a couple of suggestions.
When is the last time you cleaned out the cookies and such from your system? there are free programs like cccleaner that pull out stuff that slows down your computer.
Do you know how to defrag your system?
do you have a lot of stuff that comes on at start up? eliminate the ones you dont really need, they may be running in the background and slowing you down.
Are there a lot of programs or large programs that are taking up memory?
Have you investigated how much ram memory you have and if it can be upgraded ?

Thank you so much pikchaser for your comments but unfortunately its BT (British Telecom) thats causing the problems we think

They give prime time to their customers. We are with Talk Talk.

Its the same every night.

I don't think it is any of the things that you suggested as my husband works with computers so he would have picked up on your suggestions and he said that its always like it round here. ie CRAP!!

The last hour or so the computer has really picked up speed. Its just annoying at 7pm when I like to go on here and peruse and look at the pictures in the Share Your Shots and watching the screen is like watching paint dry!!

Thanks again for your comments it is appreciated.

is it internet speed that you are talking about or computer speed? If its computer speed, you can do something about it, if internet not a lot you can do except change provider or move to another house lol.

Exactly, is it internet speed or computer speed? Since you wrote that you're waiting for screen to refresh I figured it was your computer. Maybe you were waiting for a web page to refresh?

Btw, if your internet connection slows down from time to time, you could use the new Opera 10. It has a turbo mode which really speeds up browsing by loading lower quality images, it really works. You can switch it on when you need it. Not to mention that Opera is the best browser out there, in my opinion.

Yeah its internet speed. Sorry wasn't very clear last night. I think we need to change provider but that is a hassle in itself. We were going to go with Sky once but they faffed and faffed and 3 months later we still had no connection.

Virgin Media were equally as dumb. In fact we still have a box of their equipment here (3 years later!) which they failed to collect after numerous telephone calls asking them to pick it up!

At least with Talk Talk they're OK apart of BT monopolizing in the early evening.
