Question How to handle events with multiple dates

So I just got back from my wedding and honeymoon. Now im trying to sort and organize all 2100 pictures. Well im looking for some input as to how you all organize your events that have multiple dates. I normally organize everything by date and then event. For example I have a folder for the year and in that I have a folder for each event that is in he format of (Month)-(Day)-(Event). Well I have several day that have specific events mixed with non specific events. For example we did an ATV tour one afternoon, but I also have pics that were taken at random times throughout the day. They really dont pertain to the ATV event or any specific event. How would you organize these types of days?

I organize in the reverse of you. I organize by event, then date, so if there are multiple dates, it doesn't matter.

Congratulations! I organized by event - so wedding was one folder, then honeymoon was separate. They were obviously connected - 1 after the other, but they are completely separate after that. I had all the wedding planning photos in with the wedding, in a separate folder.

I hope that helps

Hmmm so you both do it reverse...

So if i was to reorganize in the same format that you do it would/could look something like:

\2009\Wedding\(Pics)

\2009\Honeymoon\09-16\(Random Pics)
\2009\Honeymoon\09-16\ATV Tour\(Pics)
\2009\Honeymoon\09-16\Snorkeling\(Pics)
\2009\Honeymoon\09-17\(Random Pics)
\2009\Honeymoon\09-17\Boat Tour\(Pics)

\2009\Wedding Reception\(Pics)

The 9-16 folder would contain all the random shots of that day in the root as well as a folder for specific events

Oh and how would you handle events with the same names? For example we travel back to Chicago several times a year to see family. Most of the time there is no specific event tied to the trip and I would normally just name the event as Chicago. Would I do something like "July Chicago Trip"

I have a folder for each year, then sub folders by date, and event.

This week end I'm shooting a Hispanic Heritage festival. I have it listed like this.

10-02-2009 HHF
10-03-2009 HHF
10-04-2009 HHF

To throw one more wrench into the mix... how do you keep your RAW separate from your JPEGS? Two folder structures that are identical but one for each?

I keep RAW on the desktop & port JPEGs onto my laptop (by subject) for showing via Digital Projector.

Mine looks like:
K:\Photographs\Balloons\5-31
K:\Photographs\Balloons\8-23
K:\Photographs\California\9-27
K:\Photographs\California\9-28

I transfer them to my server with Lightroom by date, then rename the year folder to whatever the event is, or I drag the sub-folders (dated folders) to the appropriate event. Like if I shot more balloons, I would upload them to my server via Lightroom, and drag the date folders to the Balloons folder in Lightroom. (It sounds more complicated than it is.)

I organise by event but organise my folders by date. I just give each event the date of the first photo in it. Therefore my file sturcture looks like this.

2008/08-31 Decorating house
2008/10-04 Wedding
2008/10-06 Honeymoon

The decorating folder contains photos taken from 08-31 through to after 10-06 but all the photos are in the one folder, if I want to orgainse those photos by date or type I can just use keywords and filters in lightroom rather than having a very complex folder structure, I like to keep all the event's photos in one folder as it easier to remeber the event than the date(s) it was on.

The method I use to import into Lightroom varies based on where the files are coming from and how many different date and events I'm importing at once but I normally import by date and then change the folder names.

I store the raw files by date, but use lightroom collections to organize by function. I can use lightrooms collections and sub-collections to bring up the appropraite photos.
