I'm looking to buy my wife a laptop - nothing fancy, just for internet and running Microsoft Office (no games, we've got the PS3 for that!). I've seen to laptops - one has Vista Basic and the other Vista Premium - my question, what is the difference and am I better off with premium?

Thanks Blue! I wonder if that is why there are such good deals on pcs at the moment? I have always been under the impression it's best to shy away from new operating systems until all the bugs are ironed out (I hear even Snow Leopard on the Mac is not good at the moment).

I'd also recommend to wait for Windows 7.
It's usually a good idea to wait for the first service pack of a new OS but in this case I don't think it's necessary. Windows 7 is pretty much Vista with a new coat of paint and some tweaks so most of the major bugs have probably already been worked out. But you'll still have the same question as to which version of Windows 7. It really shouldn't matter for her needs. The other option would be to look at a "Netbook". All the major brands make them and they are ideal for basic Office, Internet and email applications. Very light and portable and inexpensive. The good thing is they come with Windows XP. Take her down to a retail outlet and let her try one on for size first though. Also be aware of the drive size. The SSDs tend to be very limited in capacity, but that may not be an issue for her. Some come with standard HDDs. Good luck. As always, way too many options available.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Went for one with 3GB RAM and 500GB HD and Vista Basic. Bit of an old processor but for £329 I'm not complaining.
She won't be able to play any games on it but I doubt she would anyway! The kids have the PS3! I'm sticking to my Mac but how many photos can I store on her 500HD!!!
