Default raising the bar in 'SYS'...

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I feel that the quality of work that has been displayed in Share Your Shots over the last few weeks has been superb. Some have left me literally speechless and made me realise how far I still need to travel myself to get to where I want to be with this obsession called Photography (not a bad thing IMO).

What's even more encouraging is that the quality images that have been posted are from new members as well as the regular contributors, which is great to see. So...just a personal thank you from me to all you guys for sharing such great moments in time and being kind enough to share a plethora of useful information along the way on how some of them were achieved.

Cheers,

Mark

There's no way I can say this without seeming like a party pooper or a negative nilly, but I was looking through the SYS section this weekend and I had the exact opposite impression.

It's obvious there are many new photographers. Nothing wrong with being new as I still consider myself quite inexperienced even at three years. I'm not nearly to the level I want to be and have a lot of work ahead of me so I'm not knocking being new or inexperienced.

Maybe I'm just getting too picky, I don't know. I cruised through SYS in the hopes of making some comments. I found myself wanting to critique and found it hard to say "nice shot" when I didn't really feel it was a nice shot. I looked at about ten shots then just moved on to a different section thinking "wow, we have a lot of new people"

Personally I've come to feel that SYS is not helping people to improve their skills, but in fact is giving them low-quality reinforcement on their shots and not really offering anything of substance other than the obligatory "nice shot".

I want to encourage people, not discourage them, so I find myself not making any comments. The good shots in SYS are in the extreme minority. This is only my opinion and some of you will agree and some will not.

Well said. This is why I generally ignore the SYS section.

When I visit this site I usually hit the "New Posts" link along the top. I am then presented with page after page after page of SYS posts. For every 30 SYS posts there is one for general questions/discussions. The SYS is rather overwhelming.
I'd love a way of filtering out all the SYS posts.

Indeed. SYS severely limits the usefulness of the "New Post" tool. I also agree, in general, with what PwnGuy said.

I would have to agree with Mark. There are some amazing shots there. To me the whole reason for SYS is just that, Share your Shot nothing more nothing less. It's a nice place to go and share.

I feel like SYS should be taken out of General Discussion and put it into the Critique section, if not removed all together. Also, please take it out of new posts. I generally check new posts to try and help people with questions, and having 30 threads of SYS is kind of obnoxious.
Not to rant or seem cranky but a couple of other suggestions.

I spend most of my time in Earning with Photography because it combines my two favorite things (business and photography.) It seems like every week there's a bunch of threads about critiquing people's websites. I don't mind this at all but maybe there should be a sub forum in Earning like 'Website Critiques and Creation.'

Maybe there should be a rating/ranking system to SYS/Critiques based on user votes. Seperate from assignments, I think it might add something cool and encourage a bunch of people.

Just a few ideas...
Keep posting!

Might I add another perspective to the use of SYS?

Sometimes I know what's wrong with a shot that I took, and I'm certainly not looking for "Great shot!" from anyone!

Sometimes, I still like the shot -- or at least what it could have been. So I post it.

I don't mind when people critique. It's part of sharing the shot, and how else will I possibly read something about how I could have taken a better picture if no one posts their opinions? so I'm a bit mixed about the suggestion to add SYS to Critique rather than where it is.

At the same time, I do certainly understand wanting the ability to exclude SYS from the new posts. I can't say I think it should be the only option; of course, if it were, one could simply visit the SYS sub-forum to see which threads have the most recent replies there.

This thread started out Mark saying that there are a lot of great shots on SYS. I just don't understand how it turned into,,,, the need to change SYS. There is a Critique section in this forum now. So tell me what is wrong with having a section without the fear of somebody telling that that your shot sucks.
