Don't know if it's still alive and kicking, but freewebtown.com allowed for building your own site without ads of any kind unless you used their templates. You'd have to create your site from scratch, but the hosting would be free. They may have changed since I last used them, so be sure to look at all the details.

Try www.000webhost.com . It's free, no ads, some cool templates, and the subdomains are not as dorky as a lot of other hosts.

If you want a professional looking site and want to convey the impression of professionalism you will need to purchase a domain name. You can get a domain name with unlimited bandwidth and storage for about 3 - 5 bucks a month no problem.

I would never hire a photographer that wasn't serious enough to have their own domain name.

Check out asmallorange.com for hosting. They're amazing to work with and their customer support is top notch. It's $5/month for the basic plan and you can get a domain name for $10/year. It's really a tiny investment that can pay huge dividends.
