To be honest, I've been doing computer post-processing for 6 years now and I haven't found not having an IPS monitor to be an issue. Color calibration is much more important. Also why would you be working from on your computer from anywhere but in front of it?
Colour calibration is important, but so is having a constant monitor. Altering angles can be simply a few degrees and can change your view. It's important. Many screens do good jobs, but sometimes it's just not good enough.

Colour changes and contrast too, just varying a few degrees. Like colour calibration, it may not seem the biggest thing -- but it is.

IPS screens remain for monitors. Laptops are not good for post work, unless its a necessity, and even then i'd try to get connected to a normal monitor at least.

Cheapest IPS is the Dell (only accessible through Business sector). You can go for HP, NEC, Eizo, etc. ones as well, which cost a bit more.

Don't worry about ips. Just buy a standard monitor and calibrate it.
You'll get very fine results.
One reason ips monitors cost so much is because sales are low and cost of production is high. Most normal folks don't think the cost is worth it.
Actually, sales are very high for consumer IPS monitors. Such as the 2209wa, which is why it had to be taken off the market for a short period, as Dell could not supply it with the demand. It's now only available to businesses as a result.

GO MAC, YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK!!

Trust me on this, yes they don't make all the software available for pc in a mac version but that doesn't mean much. I'v made 3ppl switch to apple and they all say that will never use a pc again, its just been headache free!

Note to the OP: the Apple Cinema Display, 23", is S-IPS.

It's excellent, and comes with the perfect glossiness. Macs are good; better yet if the monitor is IPS.

I really can't say much about Macs. I really don't have much experience with them. I have 3 PCs. Two laptops and one desktop. None of them are really high performance by any means. I do my photo thing on one of the laptops and the desktop. I run CS4 on both and have no problems what so ever. When I do upgrade, I will be buying another PC. My main reason being, for the price of a base line MAC, I can buy a PC with more memory and a larger hard drive. This is just my opinion though, I think you should just go with what your comfortable with.

I've used macs most of my life so you can see what my choice is. Besides that, I absolutely love Aperture.

lol ive heard that saying before.
headache free? for someone whos not entirely ready to take that step and knows nothing about it, it would be nothing but headaches ( i dont mean that in a bad way, its just me)

i think ive made my decision. im going to go pc. i found a nice HP that is good for what i want it for without going mac.
my life will be so much easier if i just stick to things i know. with photography as is - its such a big learning experience, why complicate my life by switching over. its not only a learning headache its also a cost issue. everything i have is associated with pc so on top of spending more money on a mac, i have to use for the most part different software too? its just not worth it. i rather spend the money on upgrading my equipment that will help increase my skill level.
im simply using this towards my business where i can manage it and do some editing (nothing tooooo complicated - ill source that out until i take more courses on editing).

thanks for all the input guys. you've all had great advice. and were a good help.

PS. sorry if this topic caused little tiffs amongst some users

Just remember one thing about macs, If you think it should be that way.....it is. They are built logically and easy to learn even if you have bee around a pc for years or like me I go back and forth. I use a pc at work and a mac at home.
