Ok, so when I bought my new Canon 40D a few months ago I laid it down on a small ottoman and somehow managed to throw a shirt on top of it. My wife was picking up a little and grabbed the shirt not knowing what was beneath and then I heard her yell! I knew what happened! I walked over and saw the camera face down, it had landed right on the lens (with lens cap facing down). I think it fell about 2-3 feet. Now I don't know, because I only had it for a week and hadn't noticed before, but when I take photos now they never seem sharp enough, sometimes even a little grainy (noise) when I zoom in on the photo. Even when using a tripod with the timer set on. I'm assuming this is from the fall? Anyone who has dropped their camera before, please share!

nope sorry never dropped my camera before. But just wanted to point out that I doubt the problems you are having is due to the camera taking a fall.

Sure have,
went to put the strap around my neck last winter (Boxing day walk) and pulled my hoodie up to do this and then the world froze. All I saw was my 450D and a new 28-135mm lens with hood flying across the tarmac in the carpark, it landed about 8 feet away from a height of over 6ft, I nearly died and no on spoke for about 2 minutes, I could have cried but went over checked out the camera. Turned it on and took a couple of shots and they were fine, only thing I had was a small scratch on the lens hood. Who's a lucky boy then ![]() David. - More careful now for sure

Not dropped, but got hit by a high school player and pro player last year. Bowled over backwards too, all three cameras hit the grass along with me, but no damage to any of them except a cracked flash hot shoe.
I don't think two or three feet should matter. Those cameras are built to take a shot or two, but a rebel, is mostly made of plastic. Shoot some tests to be sure.

My 30D has taken a couple small drops, with no problems.
I recently found out a friend's Nikon took a BIG fall (tipped tripod IIRC) that ended up bending a panel on the body. Other than a couple hundred in replacement parts, there's no damage, and the camera still works great. |

My Pentax K10D took a fall from about 10 feet off the top of my closet in our entryway onto the hardwood floor. It landed on the rug which probably cushioned it just a bit but it survived without even a scratch. The lens was fine as well thankfully. I thought for sure it was a gonner. All the way down the stairs I was trying to find the words I would say to my wife as I justified buying another body and lens. I was elated when it fired right up and everything worked fine!
The same camera fell from my camera bag onto the rocks alongside a river. Same thing, just a small scratch near the battery door. I've even fell in the water and it was fine. Several years ago I actually dropped my Pentax on top of my digital Canon Rebel. The Rebel cracked open like an egg....both lenses hit almost head on...just slightly offset. The Pentax lens drove the Canon lens into the body splitting it open along the top of the lens mount. It was a pretty hard hit and while the Canon did turn on, there was no way it would ever function again. The Canon lens did survive though. As Jim said, the Rebels are mostly cheaper plastic. One of the reason's I'm a Pentax shooter...great reliability. They are heavier but worth it. I've really put them through some torture and have never lost one yet. Yes, I can be a bit of a clutz with cameras.

can you post an example of what you are experiencing with the EXIF so we can have a bit more of an in-depth look at why things are blurry or noisy?

I dropped my FujiSz602 down the side of a cliff. It bounced off several rocks before landing in the river. The cliff was maybe 30-40 feet high.
It didnt break but had a few scratches on it. Waited for about a week for it to dry out. Believe it or not it worked perfectly!

About a month ago we went the Calaveras Big Trees National Park here in CA. and we were hiking down a narrow path. Finally came to our first big tree and my husband who was in the lead said "Wow, Babe look up at this one." So stupid me looks up but continues to put one foot in front of the other and stepped in a huge hole. Before I new it , my 50D and I were laying on the ground face down. Just in time for about 5 more people to be coming back down the trail and see me hit the dirt. I was mortified and yes, the world stopped turning. I had a huge family reunion shoot of 18 people scheduled for the very next day. But low and behold my baby was fine. My leg still hurts to this day but my camera is perfect. Not even a scratch. It was very fine soft red dirt. It was filthy but not broken. My pride was more bruised then anything else. I don't think a small 2-3 foot fall would cause any harm.
