i cant say i have actually dropped my camera but i had a really close call. it must of been a miracle i tell ya. it was maybe into my second month having it and i just got my tripod. i was just testing it out and seeing what all the knobs and handles did. boy let me tell you - when i snapped off one part that holds the camera on the tripod my heart stopped (let me make a note that the tripod was at full height). i dont know how i did it but my reflex was so fast i somehow grabbed the strap just in the last second and saved if from utter disaster.

Never dropped my camera: come close, though.

I have, however, dropped my 50mm. No problems with it, so Im good. I think if it did bite the dust at some point I'd replace it with a 28 and 85mm

Only one I haven't dropped (yet) is my newest...Canon G10...

D300 down a flight of metal steps at GP races in the rain (ok, not dropped...I went with it)
SW30 150ft off a cliff while rock climbing.
D200 Bottom of river
Various Nikon F's and FM's...Cliffs/Rivers/Creeks etc...I'm hard on gear... This is why I refuse to buy the plastic "prosumer" models...

BTW, I would guess the "issues" you are seeing are over-concern and probably not due to "damage"...IME, it usually either works or it doesn't...

Yes, forgot to zip the Slingshot and pulled the bag out of the car and the Rebel with my brand new 10-22 hit the pavement. Luckily my 40D stayed in the bag. Lens was definitely damaged. Sent it in to Canon for repair (100 bucks) and all is well.

Do you have more than one lens? Could it be the lens instead of the camera?

Just for peace of mind you can either contact Canon and send it to them for "repair" which may or may not cost anything, or you can take it to a local camera store and see if they'd take a look at it for you without charging you a bunch of money.

At least that way you'll know where to focus your efforts.

Aye....my compact has fallen out my rucksack and gone bouncing down rocky trails a few times. There isn't a bit of the casing that isn't scratched, chipped, dented or cracked but it still works fine. It looks better now!

Have crashed my bike a few times when I've had DSLRs in my bag but last time the camera was fine and I got a broken toe The worst I've done was bend a hotshoe but it worked fine after I bent it back

I've dropped my 50mm lens once. Fortunately it was one of those things where is sort of hit my thigh and I stuck my foot out and it bounced off of there onto the concrete floor. All the caps were in place so all-in-all it wasn't too bad.

You didn't mention what kind of lens you had on when it "...landed right on the lens (with lens cap facing down)." If it's a zoom lens, perhaps that has something to do with it. As candleman mentioned, perhaps if you posted a pic with the EXIF date someone might be able to tell you what's going on.

Oh, yes. Back in the film days I was hiking in Colorado and met a rather annoyed rattlesnake in the middle of the trail. I jumped one way, the camera (Nikon FM) flew another, and the snake (fortunately) slithered off in a third direction. The camera bounced about 20 feet down the mountain. Cracked the filter, no other damage. I've also dropped a brand new N6006 onto a wooden floor, but that wasn't nearly as exciting ;-) Haven't dropped my D40 (yet).

I dropped mine about 3 days after I bought it, luckily it still works perfectly but since then it makes a rattling sound whenever it is shaken or tilted.

I was at Disney World, riding a train and holding a bunch of stuff including my camera. I almost always have my camera strap around my neck or tightly twisted around my wrist. he train stopped I stood up, and the camera went flying off the stack of stuff I was holding. It was fine at first but a few weeks after the trip the zoom locked up and wouldn't move. I suspect a screw or something came loose when I dropped it and finally worked itself completely out while I was shooting afterward.
