Default NikonD40x Self Timer Help

Can someone please give me step by step instructions on the self timer. I am new and have read the manual, but can't seem to get it to click!

I'm guessing it's much like the D60 - You just set the timer (can adjust the time in the custom settings menu) point and push the shutter release and wait.

The easiest way to get too the shutter release options is push the + button and navigate to shutter release.

Like I said, that's the D60, the D40 may be different???

Free is right, but I'll be more explicit:

1. Press the Info button (top, near the shutter) -- this should pop up the info screen on the back of the camera.
2. Press the +/magnifying glass button (bottom left of the rear of the camera). This lets you edit settings in the info screen.
3. Use the 4-way controller to move to the S in a box (this is probably what it looks like -- "Shooting Mode" will show up at the top of the screen when you select it, at any rate).
4. Press the OK button.
5. Options should appear. You can choose "10s" (press the shutter, then the image is taken 10 seconds later) or "2s" (use the remote, the image is taken 2 seconds after you've toggled the remote).

Hope that helps! Remember that whenever you change modes (Aperture, Shutter, etc.) the shooting mode will be reset to its default, so you may have to change this back a few times.

Thank You so much! That worked and helped me a great deal.

Any idea if the remote came with the D40X? I can't remember seeing one!

No, the remote is a separate item, about $20: here it is at Adorama. Well worth getting. My parents are always amazed when I can take family photos without having to RUN! after setting up the camera.

Yep, well worth getting, they're about $30 here in Aus. I use mine quite a bit, pretty much anytime I'm using the tripod, it's great not having to reach for the button every shot!
