Default 8x10, 300 dpi, <5M picture?

I am in the process of setting up an online printing account with a major photo printing company for my business and they are asking for certain requirements for prints, they must be less than 5M/each but with 300 dpi, but Photoshop (CS4) and Aperture (2) both won't let me do and still keep the picture within the right proportions. Is there something I'm missing with either program? I'm having real problems with the 8x10/4x5 ratio.

Thanks in advance for reading, I'm anxiously awaiting a reply.

Default nevermind

I figured it out, but I don't know how to delete the thread, so nevermind!

Admins, feel free to delete this to free up space, unless there's a way for me to do it, in which of course I'd be more than happy to.

5MB sounds a bit large? Are you exporting to jpg or tiff?

Have you tried opening a new PS document using the 8x10 preset? Then drag your image into the new doc, resize the layer/s and save as jpg.

I just did one at 2.5mb so there's a bit of room to play...

Why don't you share the answer? There's a good chance someone else will have the same same problem in the future and could learn from your experience.

Default the answer

So apparently, after having a really long day, my husband and I were both looking at the wrong numbers when saving a file...

When cropping it in PS CS4, it asks you what resolution and what proportion you want it cropped to, just crop it as the "required" size and resolution, we were looking at the pixel dimensions, not the actual file size.

All of mine were in the just over 1M range, I didn't have any anywhere close to the 5M range, we're assuming those would have to be taken with a camera with WAY more megapixels than we each have (our "highest" digital is only 8 mp).

We couldn't figure out how I could email it to him (which only lets me send 10 mp at a time, so we knew it was less than that) but when we opened it in CS4, it said we had 20M of a file when in reality, that was the pixel dimensions, not the file size.

That's what we get for trying to edit pictures after bedtime, we miss the stupid things.

haha, easy mistake to make!

Also photoshop also give you the file size at the bottom of the screen, but that is the size of the PSD not the exported jpg. That's caught a few people out before!
