Default I think i need a good foundation

Hello all

I am relatively new to digital photography (2 years), and my expectations far outweigh my ability.

Whilst DPS has many fantastic guides on how to achieve X, Y and Z, i really need some assistance with the A, B amd C.

I regulary place my Nikon D40 (70-300mm VR or 50mm prime) into one of the semi-manual modes (P or S) in an attampt to gain a better photo, and usually end up with shots where i wished i had remained in Auto or Sports mode.

I been looking for an evening course in (or around) Manchester, England that may provide me with the foundation i believe i need, but have not found anything suitable.

Can anyone recommend a good online course or book(s) that talk in simple terms, but will allow me to get a grip with getting the best from my camera?

My primary photography interests are civil aviation, thus good lighting and fast shutter speeds are required to prevent motioon blur. My secondary interest is natural low light people images.

I am also taking a once-in-a-lifetime trip through the southern African countries in a few months time, and really want to be able to nail the shots.

Any advice or direction appreciated.

Have you tried reading up on the Digital Photography Tips and Tutorials for beginners over on the blog? It's not a course, but it does offer some of those A, B, C basics that you might be looking for. There's also this site: Classroom - MorgueFile which offers some really helpful beginner lessons.

At the risk of sounding like a Scott Kelby shill (I just replied to someone on another thread with a link to his site :-), I really found the Scott Kelby "Digital Photography" vols 1-3 series to be fantastic for getting me started. His Lightroom book is also the perfect instructional manual to getting up to speed on that software.

Lee, I posted this link in another part of the forum a few days ago, you might be interested, especially as the timing will be good for you - it's held at 2pm east coast USA time, so will be 7pm GMT. It's a free online course, looks like it'll start with some basics. Can't ghurt to at least try. Starts today though!

Best wishes,

I'm going to be taking up the course offered by NYIP - Photography | Photography School | New York Institute of Photography | NYIP, its a little expensive at around £700 but I have yet to read a bad review from anybody who has done the course. The materials look really good
