As a total newbie to DSLR photography, it never occured to me when buying my camera about certain lens attachments/fitments. However, when (after my purchase) I had a look through a Canon lens guide booklet that was thrown in and it clearly demonstrates EF lenses and EFS lenses.
I panicked a bit as my camera only came with a standard 18-55mm EFS lens (58mm). Does this mean that the 1000D only accepts lenses marked 'EFS' and not 'EF'? The booklet is inconclusive in this regard. It appears there are really only a handful of lenses marked EFS but a huge variety (some of which I'd like to buy) marked EF. Please tell me I can buy EF lenses!

You can buy EF lenses! Every Canon EOS camera can use EF lenses, so that includes your camera.
EF-S lenses are special versions of EF lenses. They are made especially for those bodies with smaller sensors. Because those sensors are smaller, the mirrors are also smaller, and the lens can protrude deeper into the body without it being hit by the mirror. This has several advantages, such as lighter and smaller lenses.

That's a relief! I have just been into town and had a word with a couple of camera shop people and they have also reassured me. Thank goodness.
After doing from shooting in London yesterday, I really want a telephoto lens. There are some particular shots I want that a stock lens simply can't give me. So now it's a case of saving and asking for Christmas money early
