Just have been doing a lot of thinking about this since this thread started. I would personally go the route of buying a used decent camera off of eBay or Craigslist instead of those little toy cameras.

My daughter, who is 2 years 5 months, have finally learned how to keep her fingers off the lens of my Casio Exilim Z50 and now has moved onto learning how to aim the camera. I'm thinking that by buying a child only camera for our kids might limit them, especially if they show interest and potential. Kids pick up on this stuff fast.

I did buy her a really cheap pocket camera from awhile back, but because it was sooooo cheap, it also was so hard to use cause 2 buttons controlled EVERYTHING which made it more confusing than anything.

But that's why I would go the route of an older regular camera that a child can really grow into than a toy camera that just takes pics.

Default camera

I just bought my 6 yr old grand daughter a v smile digital camera for $47.This camera can take short movies as well as photos. The body seems pretty sturdy so ill see how she goes with it.

I think it depends entirely on your granddaughter - some kids really know how to handle a camera. I'll never forget this kid I saw at my friend's wedding - he was going around posing people for photos all day. I don't think he's any older than 6:
