Default Pictures in the park

I have taken to walking in a nearby park at lunchtimes, with a view to capturing birds in flight (they are always coming and going, whenever someone gets their sandwiches out...) While I was there yesterday, I came across three guys practising their cocktail bar moves - you know, throwing the bottle up over the shoulder from the back, whilst juggling a cocktail shaker or three in the other hand... It was such a great photo opportunity, but I chickened out. Admittedly, it was mainly through lack of confidence in approaching them, but also partly because of my uncetrainty on all the issues with release forms and privacy laws, and so on.

Presumably, I don't need release forms just to take pictures of them, but what use are the photos if I can't share them? If I wanted to use one of those pictures, say as an entry in a contest, or (I should be so lucky...) to sell, then I know I do need release forms.

Does anyone else out there back out of taking photos of people and places for the same reasons - or alternatively, do you always have a handful of release forms in the bottom of your bag?

I am just so annoyed with myself that I blew out on a great chance - to practice approaching strangers, if nothing else!

Try to take it one step at a time. Don't worry about the releases just yet. Ask if it's OK to take a few shots. Get over that initial shyness first, then work on asking for the release next. Most people, especially ones engaging in an activity like you encountered don't mind their picture being taken.

When I photograph strangers in public, I sometimes ask permission, sometimes not, but I do usually approach them at some point and show them the shots and offer my email address so that I can send them copies. I've only been turned down once when asking first.

I still haven't asked anyone to sign a release though as I don't intend to sell any of the shots, only display them in my "portfolio". For now anyway.

Hi PnwGuy,
Thanks for your words of encouragement. Small steps, eh?

Cheers,
