Default venting some steam... goddam floppies

soo.. i have a new computer, about 5 days old. and i also have a 5 button mouse that i used to use on another computer (recently formatted and given away). since i got this new PC i have been searching for the drive CD so that i can use the extra two buttons. i have searched hi and low for the CD. today i found the disc...

only it wasn't a CD... it was a 1.44mb floppy.. i don't have a floppy disc drive in either of the computer that are in operation...

soo.. off i go to the dude who i gave my last computer too... he isn't home... i then go to my neighbour, they don't have one.. i go to the one on the otherside.. he has a floppy disc drive. i think "hek yea, i will be able to copy the file to my USB stick.." no such luck. the disc appears as corrupt on his PC, and wants to be formatted.. i say no thanks and remove the floppy..

i then remember that the dead computer, hard driveless computer has a floppy.. this computer hasn't seen day light in like 5 years... i wipe the dust off it and carry it inside. remove the covers, and remove the drive. then remove the IDE cable. then attempt the remove the power cable.. no such luck at first.. it has a clip, and it wont co-operate. after 15 minutes and several close calls with my knuckles and a pocket knife i get it out. i then try to remove the faceplate for the slot it is to go in, in the new PC... that takes another 5-10 minutes ARRGHHH ! once i got that out the drive went in easy. cables co-operated, it even fitted...

so i replace the covers and boot it up.. open my computer.. no floppy drive evident.. so i put one in.. it doesn't make light nor noise.. hmm.. so i re-boot it, run BIOS.. the floppy A is dissabled.. i enable it. continue start up.. still no drive evident... re-start again. go to the BIOS.. find another place where the Drive is disabled.. i enable it.. continue boot process..

PARTY TIME its in "my computer" put in a floppy (not the one i need to use)... it appears corrupt.. so i try to format it... windows can't do that either... so i think.. maybe i don't have the IDE cable in properly.. so i shut down, crack the case open. check the cable.. yeah she's good.. re-boot. same thing.. try another floppy.. same thing.. try another dozen.. same thing.. then i find another one that is a programe and not simply storage space... I T W O R K S ! ! ! so i get all excited and try the Mouse Driver.. it appears corrupt too..

so i think.. maybe the drive doesn't have the best drive and therefore can't read all floppies. so i check the driver.. windows says it has the best one.. i check the Mouse Driver floppy again.. still crappy..

i give upp. LOL

then i start typing this.. and get half way through and the tab that i have facebook running in tells me that someone is talking to me. i read and reply.. come back to this tab... all my typing is G O N E ! ! arggghhhh !!!!!!

goddam technology...

Ditto - I always download my drivers online, rather than bothering with the CDs.

If your mouse is from the floppy era odds are there isn't a modern Windows ( I assume Windows XP/Vista/7 ? ) driver for it. If you seriously want it to work, some info about the mouse and your computer would be helpful. e.g. OS, is your mouse a ball mouse, a trackball, does it have a scroll wheel, whats the color, and most importantly how does it connect to your PC? Serial, PS2.

Try opening your device manager and click on Mice and other pointing devices. You should see your mouse. Double click it and hopefully you'll see your mouses manufacturer. From there you should be able to search their website for an identical mouse, and hopefully find a driver.
