Question Putting Yourself Out There

Hello, I am new to photography and just bought a Nikon D60. My friends and family want to see my recent shots so I've been uploading some to facebook (online connector - like myspace). A friend of my parents has been involved in photography for quite a while and upon seeing my photos on facebook, warned me. He said he had a bad experience with regards to people taking copies (low quality at that) and what not and doesn't post them anymore. Now I'm second guessing myself in deciding to post them. What do you think? I see a lot of members on here have flickr. I've never used the site myself so I'm wondering should I? Would that be a safer way to express myself through my photos? Please let me know your opinions!

p.s. sorry this is long! hehe Thanks!

Using Flickr for sharing photos is definitely better than using Facebook. Flickr is designed especially for that purpose. There is also one catch in using Facebook, as far as I've heard, that Facebook has right to use any content that you upload (you should read their Terms of use very carefully).
As far as copyright infringement goes, there is no real way to protect your stuff from stealing, the best way is to upload only small resolution images (eg. 800x600 pix) so no one can use them for some serious purpose.
