I used to use Roxio, but it is a resource hog, and at times, uncooperative. I second the use of Nero, its what I use.

All my important stuff goes on an external hard drive that goes into a fire safe box. You can get a good sized one for cheap these days.

Other than that, I use Nero for all of my burning needs.

I use Roxy and have never had a problem on my home computer. I did use Roxy on a work computer about a year ago and had similar problems. It started out only burning one about 50% of the time (like yours) and turned into only about 10% of the time. It turned out to be a bad drive, not the software.

For my photography, I use Lightroom to import and keep track of my photos. I have a second internal hard drive that I use as the main storage area for my photos. I also have an external drive for a backup as well as an off-site backup (Carbonite right now).

To get images from my memory card, I call up Lightroom and import them in from the card. During the import process, I have Lightroom set up to automatically copy the files from my memory card to my second internal hard drive as well as make a backup copy to my external hard drive. I don't even have to think about it.

Carbonite is programmed to back up nightly after midnight.

The only thing I use a DVD for is to have a master copy of my for-sale prints but only to make it easy to transfer them to another computer if I need to. It's not my master file or even my real backup.

CD/DVD burning technology is mature enough that any software will do.

To increase your success rate, you can try the following:
- decrease the write speed to 8x and turn VERIFY ON
- create a disc image (i.e., write an ISO file to hard disk) first and then burn/write image to disc. You should delete the ISO image file afterward.
