Default how to get picture attachment down to 97.7kB?

I'd like to share a picture in the forum but con't figure out how compress it to less than 100kB while still retaining reasonable size and quality.

Perhaps it's an idea to create a sticky with some hints on how to achieve this,
and maybe even point to this after someone subscribes?

thanx, Gijs.

If you keep within the Flickr size limits (500px on the longest side), JPEG images should shrink down to no more than about 30-40KB without having to apply noticable compression. See the images in my gallery for examples.

You should be able to push up to 600px on the longest side (the maximum set as a rule for uploads) within 100KB. If you want to show images larger than that, the best option is to find an external hosting solution (I use Flickr), displaying an image no larger than 800px on the longest side here and linking back to that site for those who want to view a larger version.

Don't bother!

Upload your photos to a photosharing site like flickr and embed your photos here. The quality will be much better and it will be easier for people to view. The file compression that this site applies to uploads really kills the quality, particulary sharpness.

If you must use attachments then you can reduce the file size of your photos by reducing the resolution, 500px on the longest side should be a low as you go. A fairly high level of JPEG compression should also be OK for viewing at that size. Say level 8 in photoshop.
