Default Shot Jpeg by mistake - YUK I should be shot :(

Don't know what happened but somehow my camera, Nikon D5000, got switched from RAW to Jpeg normal. I should have know something when it said I could take 800 pictures rather than the 261 it normally tells me it can take on an empty memory card. But I was not thinking and just assumed I had put a larger card in.

Anyhow, went out and took a bunch of shots down a trail near a stream and when I got home I could not figure out why in Lightroom the recovery slider was doing almost nothing. The dynamic range just is not there in jpeg, it was like night and day. Also the pictures at ISO400 and ISO800 had noticeable noise that was much harder to correct than when I shoot raw and notice almost no noise.

Never again, anyone that shoots jpeg with a D5000 is really doing themselves a significant disservice - the picture quality is night and day better in raw.

I have only shot RAW once since I got my D90 after my D80 was broken. I didn't notice a difference and then again I do no editing and have put it off due to my old POS computer until I get the funds for a new computer.

can i ask why some people dont like to shoot in raw?? reading through some of these threads on dps, i get the impression like some individuals dont like shooting in raw. what are some of the reasons for this??

as for kirb - that sucks. i guess it will make you more cautious next time to check the settings before. i always have to double check my main settings

I have tried shooting in RAW but can't open them in Photoshop CS. All I get is a greyed out screen. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong please?

You probably need to pay the photoshop tax.

(Or familiarise yourself with the DNG converter.)
