I went to a Hiroshima exhibit at the local museum just before the government went to war in Iraq , they were looking for signatures in a book to call for the diarmament of all nuclear weapons.

One image in particular always stuck in my head, it was the shadow of a man and a ladder burned into wall (similar to some of the pictures shown in your link), and I always think ..."that was some poor guy going to wash windows, or paint a wall and in an instant he was gone"

I notice in one of the images the scientist is smiling, or appears to be from the shape of his face and angle of the shot, I wonder if he had any inkling of what would happen?

edit-- I just read a portion of his nobel prize biography

"During the next two years I headed the group developing radar at 3 cm wavelength and then went to Washington as a radar consultant to the Secretary of War. In 1943 we went to Los Alamos, New Mexico, to work on the Manhattan Project.

As soon as the war ended I eagerly returned to Columbia University as a professor and research scientist. "

How does somebody who helped create, and use, a nuclear weapon end up with a nobel prize?

It never ceases to amaze me how horrible people can be to each other.

There's an old Japanese gentleman who is still alive and experienced both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

Some people I am sure will not like what I am saying but I feel that no human being should EVER invent a instument to do this kind of detruction and to so many innocent people. Makes me wonder what this world is coming to. My son is a U.S. Marine and I am proud of him for fighting for what he believes in and for our country but things like this is just wrong. Very sad pictures and I am sure there are alot worse ones we will never see.

when world leaders have a disagreement - they should be the ones to duke it out. The innoccent people should not have to pay

I think it's a mistake to assume that the people involved in creating the atomic bomb were also the one's determining its strategic useage.

He knew, they all knew, it's one and only purpose.
