Aw, dude! New York is the most diverse city on earth! You gotta give us an idea of what you'd like to do. We've got an air and space museum (mostly air) on top of a real aircraft carrier! We've got a museum of medieval artifacts which is constructed to look and feel like a real medieval monastery. The restaurant at which Washington said farewell to his troops? It's still open. Central Park is an international birding destination because of the number of species which stop off there. We've got separate museums for skyscrapers and tenements. There are 576 non-fast-food restaurants in the West Village alone.
If you can narrow down your interests I and other locals are more than happy to help. But otherwise we'll just be telling you what we like as opposed to what you would like. While you think about it, I'll give you a couple that based on your participation on this board will probably interest you. We've got a decent photography museum and the American Museum of Natural History has a smallish temporary exhibit on photography of birds in flight.

There are zillions of ethnic neighborhoods where you can get some great people shots. Chinatown and Little Italy are just two examples.Lots of bridges, buildings, traffic jams, yellow taxis....fulton fish market.... hunts point market....meat packing district....greenwich village....financial district...

Thanks for the list of places to check out
. @Homebrew...I am trying all types and as many types of places I can, since I am here for a few weeks. However sometimes when I search for things to do, I feel a bit lost. I will definetly try to check out the 'aircraft' carrier museum as you mentioned. I might have to pay a visit to Central Park once again, as the last time I went there it was pouring heavily and I lost all motivation. I am not a big fan of museums, but a friend of mine told me that the natural history museum is definetly worth checking out. Another place he mentioned is Club China, I think it's a night club which plays rock music or sure. I am a big foodie person, I like trying out new stuff, but on a tight budget and the recession I dont want to splurge too much .Is there a time limit when you can visit top of the rock & empire state building? |

Don't think there is a time limit at the Top of the Rock. For photography I would aim to get up just before the golden hour and stay until its dark. That way you get the best light and the night scene shots. You can book ahead so you can avoid the queues (if there are any, there weren't when I went).

A foodie on a budget, particularly one who is also a photographer, should definitely find himself in Chinatown -- take a 6 train downtown (probably) to Canal St. and walk east to Mott. My favorite place is the Hop Kee, downstairs at 21 Mott St. but there's all kinds of places there that are cheap and fun. Just north of Chinatown is Little Italy; it's harder to find a food bargain there but definitely worth a walk-around. You may also want to go to 6th St. between 1st and 2nd Avenues, where there are dozens of Indian restaurants, or to the middle of Little Korea, 32nd between 5th and 6th for some Korean food. I'd also recommend Katz' deli on Houston between Allen and Essex -- a sandwich is $14 bucks but it'll feed you for a week. There's also Vaselka, a now-hip Polish place on 9th St. For other stuff, try menupages.com. Don't know much about rock clubs -- they're definitely not my thing. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is at 12th Ave. and 46th St. Here's their webpage: http://www.intrepidmuseum.org. They just redid it at enormous cost and it's pretty cool. They've even got a Concorde.
