If I'm out just walking around with the short lens I don't bother with the tripod. If I'm on a mission for a certain shot I always take the tripod. I've even used it for a couple baseball games, and like to always use it for surf shots, although I forgot it last time I went out, and it shows. Usually use my monopod for sports thou, but I like being able to take a break, and let the tripod hold my camera for me.

I can get somewhat acceptable shots hand held with my 80-200 2.8, and 300 4, but I didn't put out the bucks for those lens to just get by.

Here lately I've been striving for sharpness, and it just ain't gonna happen hand held. I even got a cable release so I don't have to touch the camera.

Tripod: Slik Pro 700 DX
Head: Bogen Manfrotto 488RC4 ball
Monopod: Bogen Manfrotto 681B

This one is hard for me because, I prefer to use one, as I really think it makes for a better shot. But, circumstances rarely allow me to do so. I do however, always either carry my tripod with me or at the very least my mono pod.
I always use it if i am trying to shoot in a low light situation or if I am seeing something great that allows me enough time to set up. (Sunrises, sunsets, certain landscapes)
So altho my prefernce is to use one, most of the time I dont

I do portraits at work and I always use a tripod, and about 50% of the time at home and out and about I use one. But, sometimes I just don't feel like lugging the silly thing around.

Well since I bought my new camera (dslr), I have purchased, what I call a good tripod (Manfrotto 190xB) & try to use it as often as I can. Of course some shots don't warrant it. But now that I have found that my shots are much better with using the tripod, I guess that is how I'll vote.

hiya,
only new to the forum and only new to photography !

after read this survey, I just remembered I had a tripod that my dad gave me years and years ago (but since I didnt have a good camera until last month I didnt need it).

Just found it in the back of the garage and took it out and now am wondering what i can quickly use it for!

so I've vote no .. but it might be NOT YET really.

I guess i am more apt to use the tripod than not - so long as im out on a photo walk or similar(when i tend to carry all my gear). I tend to go for landscapes (particularly at sunset or close to it) so need to make use of longer shutter speeds. Saying that if i buy a lens with IS i might change!

Most of my photos are taken outside on my walks, in bright sunlight, so I voted "no", but I really should be using one more than I do.

That said, I do use it for the majority of my self-portraits. That said, I've also used things like "empty trash bag box" and "full roll of toilet paper" to stabilize the camera in places that I couldn't get the tripod to fit.

I had to vote No, simply because like velvet, i mainly just go for a walk around looking for inspiration, but i always take my tripod with me.

Alot of my shots involve being in public places, such as the city centre etc. and it isnt easy to keep setting up a Tripod in those surroundings, or just carrying the camera around on it either.

ike,

I pretty much am a use my tripod when I have to sort of person because like a few other people have said, I mostly just walk around with my camera and snap what catches my eye. I pretty much only use my tripod for night shoots, product-type shoots / still lifes, and if I ever have a picture where I need to be in it (No comments Sime!! )
